Grant Research and Writing Intern

Kennebec Behavioral Health, established in 1960 to provide comprehensive behavioral health services, named one of the Best Places to Work in Maine for the last 5 years and now recognized as a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC), is seeking a motivated and detail- oriented Grant Research and Writing Intern to work with our Development and Community Engagement team.   This unpaid position could be remote or work in our Augusta office (with hybrid options available) for 10-15 hours per week.  The position will support the KBH team in identifying funding opportunities and assisting in the preparation of grant proposals. This internship is ideal for students or recent graduates interested in nonprofit management, writing, public health, or fundraising.  This internship is ideal for students, recent graduates, adult learners or career-transitioning professionals.

Some of the key duties of the position:

• Conduct prospect research on potential foundation, corporate, and government grant opportunities that align with KBH’s mission and services.
• Maintain and update a grant tracking database and calendar of deadlines.
• Draft sections of grant proposals, including needs statements, program descriptions, and organizational overviews.
• Assist with gathering and formatting supporting documents for proposals (budgets, staff bios, outcome data, etc.).
• Prepare background research and summary briefs to support decision-making by leadership.
• Participate in weekly check-ins with the development team and contribute to grant strategy discussions.

Desired Qualifications:

• Strong written communication and research skills.
• Ability to synthesize complex information clearly and concisely.
• Interest in behavioral health, public service, or nonprofit work.
• Highly organized with attention to deadlines and details.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office/365; experience with grant research tools (e.g., Foundation Directory Online) is a plus.
• Self-motivated and comfortable working independently or as part of a small team.
