Wednesday Wellness: Seeing a Therapist

Seeing a therapist for the first time could cause anyone to be unsure. Opening up to a stranger about problems in your life can make you feel vulnerable. So how can you prepare for that first session?


Expect a lot of icebreakers the first time you see a therapist. Your counselor wants a well-rounded idea of the issues you’re facing.


Make it a two-way interview. Ask questions about what they specialize in and how they can help you specifically to ensure they are a good match.


Discuss ‘hot buttons’ or actions and words that could cause harm to this new relationship.


Finally, remember that you are not obliged to disclose anything that makes you uncomfortable. Don’t lay everything out on the table during the first session.
