Wednesday Wellness: Dealing with Family Strife

Conflict can happen when family members have different views or beliefs that clash. Sometimes conflict can occur when people misunderstand each other and jump to the wrong conclusion. Issues of conflict that are not resolved peacefully can lead to arguments and resentment. So what can you do in the face of family strife?

 

Act opposite to your initial feeling. Although how you feel is always valid, your feelings are not facts. Feelings also cause us to be impulsive so try to stay objective.

 

Use ‘I feel’ sentences to explain your position and then ask why someone else feels the way they do and don’t discount them outright.

 

Finally, don’t label: Don’t call one another names or box one another in. Be open to the different points of view and ideas. Avoid put downs or mean comments.
