After a trauma or life-threatening event, it is common to have reactions such as upsetting memories of the event, increased jumpiness, or trouble sleeping. But, if these reactions do not go away or if they get worse, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder may be the cause.

Someone suffering from PTSD may:

  • Relive the event through bad memories, nightmares or flashbacks.
  • Avoid situations or people that trigger reminders of the event.
  • Have negative changes in beliefs or feelings such as fear, guilt or shame
  • Or feel jittery and extra alert to danger.

If you or someone you love is struggling with PTSD or other mental health concerns, it's important and very helpful to get connected with a qualified behavioral health provider or veteran service organization that can help.
