Wednesday Wellness: Co-occurring Disorders

According to research, 37 percent of people with alcohol use disorders and 53 percent of people with drug use disorders also have additional mental illnesses. Here are a few ways to help live a healthier life while dealing with co-occurring disorders.


Talk to a doctor or therapist about treatment that targets underlying mental health concerns like depression as well as the substance use disorder.


Have a plan and work your plan. You should develop and write down a behavioral plan with goals. Review your plan whenever you feel vulnerable.


Finally, recognize that substance use can often be a form of self-medication to lessen the symptoms of an underlying mental health condition. Find alternative ways to relieve stress such as meditation, exercise or hobbies.
